Measure the inside diameter of the bathtub drain opening, then check its crossbar and stopper arrangement. The outer metal trim is not the measurement that determines whether an in-drain hair catcher fits.
What to have ready
Use a ruler marked in inches or millimeters, good lighting, and your phone for a photo. A clear photo taken from above can help the product seller understand the arrangement inside your drain.
1. Check the stopper before measuring
The opening must be accessible so you can see its inner edges. Follow your drain manufacturer's instructions for opening or removing the stopper. Do not force an unfamiliar mechanism. Some stopper assemblies occupy space that an in-drain catcher needs.
2. Measure across the center
Position your ruler across the middle of the opening. Read the distance from one inside edge to the opposite inside edge. Avoid measuring across the flange: that decorative metal ring can be wider than the opening below it.
For reference, 1.5 inches is 38.1 millimeters and 1.75 inches is 44.45 millimeters. If your ruler is difficult to position or your reading is near a product's fit limit, send a photo and measurement for help rather than guessing.
3. Look inside the opening
Check for a center crossbar or cross brace. Also note any raised post, fixed strainer, or stopper hardware. Diameter alone does not establish compatibility: the catcher needs room to sit correctly and a suitable support arrangement.
4. Compare your drain with the product requirements
| Check | Reusable EcoKatch bathtub hair catcher |
|---|---|
| Inner opening | Compatible 1.5–1.75-inch bathtub drain opening |
| Support | Center crossbar or cross brace |
| Stopper hardware | Must allow the catcher to be installed correctly |
| Shower-floor drains | Do not assume this bathtub model fits |
If your drain is outside the stated range, lacks the required support, or has obstructing hardware, contact us before ordering.
5. Check installation and water flow
After confirming compatibility, follow the product instructions to install the catcher. It should sit securely without being forced. Check drainage and inspect it after the first use. Regular emptying is part of using any hair catcher.
Common measurement questions
Is the width of the metal ring the drain size?
No. For an in-drain catcher, measure the inner opening.
Does a pop-up stopper guarantee compatibility?
No. The opening, support, and hardware arrangement still need checking.
Can I still fill my bathtub?
A hair catcher and a water stopper have different jobs. Check your pack contents and follow the instructions for your stopper.
